Monday, May 23rdIt’s May and you know what Alice Cooper says: School’s out for summer! Okay, not really. School, for a grad student, is never truly "out." I took all of my final exams during the first week of May, finished up a paper the week after that, and now I’m beginning the painfully slow process of starting my Masters thesis. I'm at the stage where I am reading through a bunch of articles related to the topic I'm investigating. Problem is, a lot of the articles I have aren't entirely related to what I'm studying so it’s been a bit hard to wean out what's important and what's not. I should probably meet with my advisors and see what they have to say about it. I also have summer school to attend during July – my class meets every day for two whole hours! The class is Applied Research in Special Education and it will probably be as fun as it sounds. On an unsarcastic note, it will be sad because it will be the last class I take with a lot of the people in the Masters program because most of them are doing the non-thesis thing and therefore get to graduate after 3 semesters, or they are my pal John and started their thesis back in January! But then they will all move away and I will be sad.
This past week has been all about little kids! Namely, the ones that are related to us. Last weekend we drove up to Plano to visit Brian, Kendra and li'l Ethan. And then on Thursday and Friday, Ben and Alicia came out from Florida with Michael, Jarus and Kaiya for a quick visit. Check out the pictures page for a whole bunch of photos. Kaiya moved around a lot so I couldn't really get too many non-blurry pictures of her.
While we were up in Plano I got my butt majorly kicked by my allergies. Complete misery. Turns out the tree pollen exploded up there during the weekend and I could not handle it. It wasn’t quite as bad as the beginning of April, though, right around the time when we moved into the new apartment. The guy on the news said that tree pollen counts were in the neighborhood of 5800. The major problem was that the "very high" categorization began at a pollen count of 1800!! My asthma was never worse than those couple of weeks. My inhaler was having a seriously tough time keeping up.

I read on the internet that allergy season in Austin is April and May, so hopefully all this blooming business will end soon. The upside to this, I guess, is that Austin is just full of trees! Many, many more than Los Angeles, that's for sure. It speaks volumes to the differences between the two cities.
Megan's work schedule changes every two months and she's set to start the Tuesday through Saturday 7am-4pm shift this week. Right now she's on the Tues-Sat 9-6 shift, which is kinda nice because it means we can stay up later than when she was on the M-F 8-5 shift. We gave up having a "real" Friday night though, because having to work on Saturday totally ruins the whole Friday night vibe if you know what I mean. Now we will just be going to bed very early and not having a Friday either. That's life!
As for our personal health, we are doing well. We both went to the dentist last month and learned how to floss properly. You have to get under the gums, people! We also purchased an Andamiro Pump It Up! dance pad that runs our computer. We've been trying to keep a 30 minute/day, 4 days/week schedule but have been only so-so on maintaining that (road trips and visitors, you know). We certainly do work up a sweat on it, though, and it definitely beats running! Man, I hate running. I always have, even when I was in shape (that was when I was 16, in case you were curious).
