Baby Face

Today Jeff and I were walking through the crowds on the ground floor of one of the dorms where there are restaurants and shops, and since it is the beginning of the spring semester, kids were handing out fliers to enlist people for groups and clubs and activities. One of them handed Jeff a card inviting him to rush their fraternity.

He turns 30 this month.

Cold-blooded Killer

I remember this one time in Gilberts (where my family lived during the mid 90s). My siblings and I were building snowmen, and we couldn't get the head to stay on one of them, so we left the head on the ground, put red food coloring around it and on the snowman's neck area and gave the snowman next to him an axe.

It was funny. People laughed. That is all.

Wednesday, August 15th

Score: Megan-1, Jeff-zilch

I opened the kitchen trashcan today to throw something away, and the lid fanned the garbage air toward me as it closed. It was awful - like onions soaked in chicken juice left to fester in a hot garage all day.

I remarked, "Ugh. Something smells gross in the trashcan."

Jeff retorted, "Maybe it's, uh, trash."

"Well, yeah, but trash doesn't always smell that nasty, smarty-pants."

"I've always told you I'm smart. I'm glad you're finally starting to acknowledge it."

I paused for just a second, and then it came to me all sparkly and magical-like: "I didn't say you were smart. I said your pants were."

Yes! I win.

Actually, I think it's just a kind of pepper...

Today Jeff and I went out to the big orange home improvement store to get a test quart of the paint color we chose for the outside of our house (shale gray), a putty knife, and some baseboard molding (for some reason the baseboard in our bathroom is mismatched).

We stopped at Chipotle to get burritos to take home with us for lunch. I got chicken, black beans, rice, sour cream, and cheese, and Jeff got steak, pinto beans, rice, sour cream, and cheese.

We were in and out of there in like 2 minutes. I was quite impressed, and on the way back to the car I remarked, "Wow, they were efficient!"

Jeff responded, "Yeah, man, it's Chipotle. Chipotle is Spanish for 'No messin' around!'"

Additionally, when we got home I was pulling out the burritos and wondering how I would be able to tell which was which only to find that the level of service at this Chipotle exceeded mere efficiency. They they hadn't just marked them with a C for chicken and S for steak; they were marked "Hers" and "He's."

I thought it was so cute that I'm letting the grammatical gaffe slide.

Making Austin Weirder

We went grocery shopping on Friday night around 10:30 (we almost always go at night to avoid crowds), and we were greeted just inside the door by two H-E-B employees. One was just standing there grinning, and the other one had a guitar slung over his shoulder and one of those harmonica headgear contraptions around his neck. Next to him was a little chalkboard which said "Now playing: [whatever the dude's name was]." The one greeted us while the other serenaded us into the grocery store. It was very odd... to the point of being surreal. Here's what I have to say about this:

Dear H-E-B,
We enjoy Austin being the live music capital of Texas or the country or the world or whatever, but I think you may be taking that just a little too far or, at the very least, not executing it properly. We could barely fit our shopping cart between musician guy and the tables of muffins and slices of cake.

Love,
Megan

P.S. - Thank you for having individually packaged slices of cake. Sometimes I want a slice of cake but have no use for an entire cake. That was a very good idea.

Kittens n things

So somebody abandoned a litter of adorable little kittens in my friend Sam's yard, but she had to go away for the weekend and couldn't watch them, so she let Mandy kittensit while she was away. So then Megan and me went over to Mandy's to play with the kittens. One of them took a huge liking to Megan, but we escaped sans baby cat. Seriously, there's not enough room in this house for another one.

A Texas-Style Snow Day

For the first time since we've moved here, it has snowed in Austin! We'd heard the rumors of snow happening now and again, but how fun it is to see white stuff fall from the sky. Not on the scale of a blizzard or anything, but it has been sufficiently cold and rainy to leave a quarter-inch layer of ice on things like cars and garbage cans. Knowing that everything (work- and school-wise) would be closed down today, we were able to sleep in (TOTALLY WORTH THE FREEZING TEMPERATURES!!!) and right when I woke up it started snowing. It didn't dump a whole bunch, but it was still cool to experience. So I guess you wouldn't really call it a "snow day" so much as an "ice day", but what the heck, we'll take all the guilt-free days off we can get.
